Castletownbere official name Castletown-Bearhaven is the principle town on the Beara peninsula. It is the largest whitefish port in Ireland. Berehaven being the second largest natural harbour in the world, it is a safe anchorage for yachts and is ideal for watersports, from sea angling to windsurfing. Just outside the town is Berehaven Golf Club This 9 hole golf club has magnificent view of Bere Island and Berehaven Harbour.
The Battle of Dunboy took place here in 1602 with "O'Sullivan Beare" and clan fighting the English and it's castle ruins are still to be seen "Puxley's House" is on same grounds - was owned by an English copper mining family.
One cannot go to Castletowbere without a visit to "MacCarthy's Bar", genuine original with grocery-store (mainly for local fishermen) in one half and fully licensed bar in the other, great for a game of darts and weekly bridge games.
Canoeing is taught in Castletowbere in Droum South. Hiking, Biking and hill walks are popular and well developed there.
"Hungry Hill" - the Highest of the "Caha mountains" in Beara and has a 60 meter high waterfall flowing down its seaward side.
