| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

DWW July 20, 2010 D. R. Ulmer (Reading,Pa) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This title in my opinion,is the best film I have seen, that gives the viewer an upclose view of the daily lives of the Indian tribes of the time. While there is the opinion of some that it is an unfairly romantic shaded prism,at least it does not go the route of the usual western in betraying the Indian people as totally barbaric. In short, because we are given this prolonged insight,we can at least understand why it was so dificult for them to trust the White man. Overall, this film offers some eye opening views into this country's past and the scenery is breathtaking as well!
Everlasting July 20, 2010 S. Codrut (Ro.) 20 years after its initial release and it still captivates. In spite of some historical and cultural minuses, it remains one of the best movies of all times...
Interesting, and satisfying purchase July 2, 2010 derryhawk (Ireland) Very plesed with this film. For so many years Native Americans were painted by Hollywood as Savages...By the descendants of those who savaged them. This story helps to set a balance, and reveals intersting points about the culture of some of them. Worth buying, and worth watching.
still worth a watch June 2, 2010 glad2bhere (worcester, uk) Hearing that school uses this as a way of getting kids to consider the lifestyle of Plains Indians for a GCSE History American West option, we tried to rent it - that proved impossible - so we bought a copy - it kept the teens gripped (it is LONG!) but gave a lot of food for thought. I was surprised at the level of detail, and the sympathetic portrayal of the Native Americans. It gives the impression of the "frontier", although on a small screen it lacks some of the impact I recall from a cinema viewing, with those enormous skies and the buffalo hunt drama. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable and sometimes moving this film remains, years down the line since I first saw it.
Costner at his best June 1, 2010 Mr. Harry A. Wilkins (Crete Greece) This has to be amongst the best westerns ever. Kevin Costner is great in his roll as an army officer who goes "native". Entertaining from start to finish. Shame about the wolf!!
