Amazon.co.uk Review A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! --Mark Englehart

Gladiator July 30, 2010 Bobby Jarome (London) Great film, always good to watch over and over again. Haven't seen this one yet. Hope the Blu-Ray makes a difference. It was delivered late.
Excellent Film July 26, 2010 Jeff K This is a great movie.Reminds me of the classic spectacles Hollywood produced years ago.You have top notch performances coupled with a great storyline.Fans of this genre should purchase without hesitation.I would also mention the qualit yof the bllu ray is quite good. The audio is fantastic. The steelbook case is also quite attractive.
Blu-ray Remastered Gladiator July 25, 2010 IDB (Warwickshire, England) Further to Chris Wing's information, it's worth mentioning that in the USA a running production change has been initiated, so future copies shipped to retailers will include the new transfer. In other countries around the world, the new disc is being gradually rolled out in each region by Universal so hopefully given time all new BD's should include the new transfer (though this hasn't been officially confirmed by Universal in the UK yet).
Blu-ray exchange program July 24, 2010 Chris Dilke Wing (Brixham, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I won't go into too much detail about the film itself, as there isn't a lot I can say which hasn't already been mentioned. Terrific action scenes, great performances and direction made Gladiator one of the best historical epics of the last 20 years. Although I did not buy the film on Blu-ray, I heard about how several people who rushed out to buy it were displeased with the excessive DNR and edge enhancement in the transfer (which is the reason I avoided it). But after months of rumours, waiting and wondering, the film has been remastered and an exchange program has now been put in place. For those who are not aware of it yet, here is the information that Universal is giving you:
"If you wish to exchange your original DVNR (digital video noise reduction) feature disc we ask that you send us just your disc 1 in an envelope with your name and address enclosed. Please keep your original packaging and we will post you out a new disc 1."
Disc 1 should be mailed to the following address:
Universal Pictures (UK) Ltd
'Gladiator Exchange'
Prospect House
80-110 New Oxford Street
London
WC1A 1HB
They say that the new discs won't be available in the UK for about 1 month. I'm guessing this means that you can send your current copy off now but will be required to wait a month for the replacement. And also, I am sure it is bound to happen, but there is no confirmation yet on whether the new version will be directly available to buy in stores, for those who didn't buy the Blu-ray first time around and do not wish to give a DNR infected copy. It is also currently unknown whether the remaining stock for the current version will be recalled by the studio and replaced a couple of weeks later by the new version (like the Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray recall). Hope this information helps those who were disappointed.
Better than DVD, but not by too much July 14, 2010 Mark Ringland 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Now you may have read many reviews that the transfer of this epic film onto blu-ray is "terrible, disgraceful" etc etc.
I have to disagree, whilst it isn't leaps and bounds better than a scaled up version of the dvd, the picture is still clearer and crisper on blu ray. Many people agree that these descrepencies are more noticeable on the larger screens. Granted, this blu-ray release isn't all that compared to many blu-rays around these days. Thankfully there should be a remastered version out some time the latter part of this year so if you can hold off then do so to see it in "hopefully" all its glory. I only purchased this as it was on a multibuy offer so its not all doom and gloom at the end of the day. To sum up, the blu ray is a good version of the film and does it some justice, but this apparent remaster should be the version that we should have had to begin with
