A Not-So-Classic Classic July 23, 2010 Bint Laden (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am 14 years old and a classic book would not be my primary choice of reading material. However it is a GCSE text I may have to read next year and so I thought it would be useful to have some experience with what I could be dealing with. And I'm glad I did. As soon as the plot got moving and I was familiar with the characters, I forgot all about the book being a 'classic' and just enjoyed an enthralling piece of literature. Having managed to get my head around a few of the American language traits of the 1930s and once I had got to know the developed personalities of the characters after the first two or three chapters 'To Kill a Mockingbird' became an easy enough read and I was able to enjoy the vibrant charactors and there actions within the book as well as the twists and turns of the plot itself. I would recommend this book to anyone with a reading age of 13+ and to anyone around this age, do not let the word 'classic' intimidate you; this book seems to fall into this catorgery without being a tiresome, incomprhensivable piece of literature, written hundreds of years ago. Trust me.
Overall this book was a joy to read; tremendously written with an outstanding plot and characters you can't help but fall in love with. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.

A timeless classic July 23, 2010 Jean F 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having read this book as a child, I approached it again for the first time in 20 years. Excellent and gripping as ever. Probably the classic 20th century American novel for the world. Nothing else will ever compare.
Life, writ heartwarming, terrifying and true July 20, 2010 Barca 82 (UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This remains the greatest book I've ever read. It contains all anyone needs to know about life. Seen through the eyes of a child (Scout) everything is magnified with the essence of purity and truth, black and white. Atticus is a guiding light to many I suspect; the need to "walk a mile in a man's shoes" before judging him, the hope that tolerance and love can overcome ignorance and hatred, that justice can be done. As if thats not enough, the book serves as an elegiac and mournful lament on the passing of the American South. A touching, poignant and violent tale; when she wrote this, Harper Lee was blessed with a soulfulness and grace that feels as though it were heaven sent.
