Product Description Marion and Shiva Stone, born in a mission hospital in Ethiopia in the 1950s, are twin sons of an illicit union between an Indian nun and British doctor. Bound by birth but with widely different temperaments they grow up together, in a country on the brink of revolution, until a betrayal splits them apart. But fate has not finished with them.

Compulsive reading! September 2, 2010 J. Baxter (Near Poitiers France) I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite the medical setting!! There was enough medical detail to understand what was going on and why, but not so much that it became overwhelming! It was fascinating to read about Ethiopia during this period of huge social change!
The combo of medical details and personal stories was captivating and it was hard to put it down!!
Will definitely stay on the look out for more books by Abraham Verghese!
Ethiopia August 27, 2010 Michael Wales (Italy) Brilliant story with all the full and authentic colour of Ethiopia. The plot begins in a surreal way but quickly develops into a gripping story that extends over the lifetime of the narrator. There is nothing at all false in the descriptions of Addis Ababa and the characters involved and the medical procedures all seem credible.
Amazing book - unforgettable August 20, 2010 Annsofi Wiles (Biot, France) A fantastic read. Love the way Abraham Verghese writes. Thrilling story and it kept me truly spellbound. Missed it when it ended because it took me to countries I've never been to and made me aware of conflicts I've never really grasped before. Why Verghese chose this title for his book took me some time to figure out. When I finally reached that part of the book where Verghese with a few setenses mentions 'cutting for Stone' the revelation took my breath away, like when you finally learn something in school you've never understood before. It is so subtle and clever. I've bought copies of this book for my children. The book is just 'a must have to keep'.
A real page turner. August 19, 2010 J. Faris (UK)
This is a beautiful book by an author with a real talent for writing narrative. If we all have a story inside us then this is the author's.
Can I give it 6 stars? August 19, 2010 Imrahil Frankly, 5 stars are not sufficient for this wonderful book. The opening chapters are exceptionally strong and gripping, and although Mr. Verghese can't keep up this momentum in the middle section, the final quarter is also breathtaking. It's not for the medically squeamish, but for an insight into a surgeon's mind and skills it's unparalleled. From outstanding descriptions of the life and culture of Ethiopia, India and the States to genuine characters whom you come to love, through to heart-warming and heart-wrenching events, this is the kind of book I can't wait to read again in a few years time.
